A well-designed garden path not only makes your outdoor space more functional but also adds character and charm. Whether you want a winding walkway through flower beds or a neat, straight path to your patio, building it yourself can be a rewarding DIY project. With the right aggregates, paving sand, and self-binding gravel, you can create a durable, low-maintenance path that looks fantastic and stands the test of time.
In this guide, we’ll show you step by step how to build your own garden path and which materials are best suited for the job.
Why Choose a DIY Garden Path?
DIY garden paths are a cost-effective way to personalise your outdoor space. Instead of hiring contractors, you can design and build a walkway that suits your style, budget, and garden layout. Plus, by choosing the right aggregates, you’ll create a path that’s not only attractive but also practical and long-lasting.
Materials You’ll Need
Before you start, gather the right materials. At Westcott Sand & Aggregates, we supply a wide range of high-quality aggregates perfect for garden paths.
Here are some top options:
0–4mm Granite Dust Bulk Bag
–Ideal as a bedding layer or for compacting under paving slabs, perfect for artificial grass bases as the minerals in granite dust prevent the crystallisation of animal urine thus preventing odours, and alternatively as a cost effective compacted grey footpath area or compacted decorative border.

0–4mm Limestone Dust Bulk Bag
– A versatile, fine aggregate for leveling and filling.

Cotswold Self-Binding Path Gravel Bulk Bag
– A popular choice for natural-looking driveway toppers with excellent durability and easy self-maintenance.

10mm Dust Cotswold Self-Binding Footpath Gravel Bulk Bag
– Great for traditional, natural-looking footpaths similar to those seen in National Trust properties

Dove Grey Footpath Hoggin
–A stylish choice with a soft, natural pale grey tone, perfect for creating a muted, contemporary garden look. Pair it with our 20mm Dove Grey Chippings to add depth and texture.

You’ll also need edging (wood, brick, or stone), a rake, shovel, wheelbarrow, compactor, and string line for straight paths.
Step-by-Step Guide to Building Your Garden Path
1. Plan Your Path
Decide where your path will go. Mark out the route using pegs and string for straight paths or a garden hose for curves. Think about width, typically, paths should be at least 60cm wide for comfortable walking.
2. Excavate the Area
Dig out the top layer of soil along the marked route to a depth of about 10–15cm. Remove weeds, stones, and roots to create a solid base.
3. Lay the Sub-Base
Spread a layer of 20mm Scalps or Type 1 across the excavated area as your first base layer to provide stability. Compact it well using a wacker plate or hand tamper to create a strong, stable foundation.
4. Add Your Chosen Path Material
Next, spread your chosen aggregate. All of the above options can be chosen as they are toppers after the base layer.. Rake the surface level and compact in layers until you achieve the desired finish.
5. Install Edging (Optional)
Edging helps keep your path neat and prevents aggregates from spilling into the garden. You can use wood, stone, or brick depending on your garden’s style.
6. Compact & Finish
Once your path material is laid, compact it thoroughly to lock everything in place. Lightly water the surface if you’re using self-binding gravel, as this helps it set into a smooth, firm surface.
